A Seaholm senior applying to a college that interviews will meet an alumnus somewhere small, a coffee shop or a kitchen table. It isn’t a suit occasion. It’s a jacket occasion, and a seventeen-year-old who has never owned a jacket that fits doesn’t know that the fit is the whole message.
What to wear to a table for two
A navy jacket, a collared shirt with the collar open or a knit tie, gray or tan trousers, a leather shoe. It says: I understood what this was. A full suit says: I was not sure, so I did everything.
The jacket is the purchase
Buy the jacket properly and it does the interviews, the awards night, and the first day of the summer job. A navy sport coat from our floor, chosen in his real size and set by Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, so the sleeve shows a quarter inch of cuff and the body doesn’t swim.
Two things a parent should know
He will grow after October. Roman leaves him room to let out once, where the cloth allows. And nobody on our floor is on commission, so if the jacket in his closet already works, you’ll be told to keep it.
