Most families shoot the senior portrait for Bloomfield Hills High School on Lahser Road the summer before, outdoors, in the one outfit that outlives everything else from high school. The yearbook. The grandparents’ mantel. Everyone worries about the shirt. The camera sees the suit.
What summer light does
Navy. Black goes flat in full sun and a pattern fights the trees behind him. A white shirt, one plain tie, and a jacket that closes at the button without a pull, because the photographer will ask him to stand and that button is the first thing the lens finds.
Buy it for the year, not the shoot
The same navy suit does the portrait in the summer, homecoming in the fall and the college interviews after that. A suit with that job is Everyday Classics money, $139 to $159, and it’ll still fit in May if it’s bought in the shoulder he has now.
The fitting is the photograph
A consultant measures him on the floor, and Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, gets the sleeve and the hem right. In a portrait those two are most of what a camera can see.
