IKEA has stood at 41640 Ford Road for more than seventeen years, long enough that an entire generation in Canton grew up understanding something their grandparents would have found strange: that a product can arrive unfinished, and that the assembly is part of what you bought rather than a defect in it.
A suit works exactly this way
Every suit sold anywhere leaves the factory made to a pattern, for a body that doesn’t exist. What turns it into a suit for one particular man is the alteration afterward, and that step is not optional finishing. It’s the point.
Where the analogy holds
Both are cheaper because the last stage is deferred, and both are ruined by skipping it. A bookcase assembled wrong and a suit worn unaltered are the same category of mistake.
Where it breaks
You can’t do this one yourself. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, is the assembly, which is why buying a suit where the tailor works in the same building is worth more than the same suit bought where he doesn’t.
