A certain kind of groom, and it’s usually the most considerate one, tells his groomsmen to wear whatever navy suit they already own. He is trying to spare his friends an expense. It’s a genuinely kind instinct and it produces, without exception, the worst group photograph of the wedding.
Why it fails
Because “navy” describes a range wide enough to include six visibly different colors, and because suits differ in lapel width, jacket length and how faded they’ve become. Eight men in their own navy suits don’t look relaxed. They look like eight men who were never told anything.
The kind version that works
Choose the cloth centrally, then let each man decide whether to rent or buy. The color is consistent, the cost is his own choice, and nobody is forced into an expense he didn’t want.
What that costs to organize
One evening with a few of them present to settle the bolt, then individual fittings. A single order covers the group, so the considerate instinct survives intact. Ask about group pricing for parties of five or more.
