Van Dyke Avenue carries the name of James Van Dyke, who was mayor of Detroit in 1847. Tens of thousands of people use the road every day and essentially none of them know this, which takes nothing away from the road. It works whether or not anyone knows where the name came from, and it always has.
Clothes contain a great deal of this
Menswear is full of details with elaborate histories: why a jacket has buttons on the cuff, why lapels have a hole in them, why a suit has a vent. Enthusiasts can explain all of it and none of the explanations matter to how a suit looks on a man.
What actually matters
Three things, and you don’t need a word of history for any of them. Does the shoulder seam sit where his shoulder ends. Does the jacket close without pulling. Do the trousers break once on the shoe.
Which is good news
It means nobody needs to learn a subject to buy a suit well. He needs to be measured, to try more than one, and to have the alterations done. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, handles the last of the three.
