The Gallery at The Henry hosts the kind of evening that arrives with black tie on the card, and most of the men in that room wear a tuxedo once a year. For them the question is never what to wear. It’s whether to borrow one for the night or keep one, and the answer is a count of cards.
One card: rent
A consultant puts the jacket on you at the mirror and changes the size if the shoulder’s wrong. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, pins the trousers to the shoes you brought. It goes back after, and nobody in the Gallery is the wiser.
Several cards: own
A tuxedo fitted to you once is in the closet, fitted, for every card after. The rental money from three or four autumns becomes one jacket that gets better with age. Nobody on our floor is on commission, so nobody counts your evenings for you. You count them.
What the Gallery asks
Black or midnight blue, a white shirt that fits the neck, black shoes, and a jacket that buttons clean under gallery light, which is brighter than dinner light and shows more. That last part is the fitting.
