Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of Arts seats around 160 for a wedding, surrounded on every wall by Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals. It is among the most photographed rooms in the state and it presents a groom with a problem no ordinary venue does: the room is more interesting than he is, and everybody knows it.
The instinct is to compete
Something with presence, to hold its own against the walls. This never works. The murals cover the entire room floor to ceiling, in enormous scale and strong color, and nothing a man can wear registers against them.
So don’t
Wear the plainest dark suit you own and let the room do what it was built to do. In the photographs, a simple dark figure against that wall reads clearly; a busy one becomes part of the visual noise and disappears entirely.
What plain requires
Fit, since there’s nothing else for the eye to hold. Half-canvassed at $300 to $500 keeps the chest and shoulder line clean through a long day, and Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, closes the gap between the rack and the man.
Also for Detroit: The Great Hall, at Three Hundred and at Five Hundred. More on wedding suits, or plan your visit to our Oak Park showroom.
