The Bank Wedding Hall in Farmington Hills holds up to 200, and at 200 the two fathers are never out of frame. They stand together for the photographs, they sit at the same table, they toast one after the other. And in most weddings they’ve never met a tailor in the same month, let alone the same room, so one is in a suit from 2014 and the other is in something bought last week.
Bring them in together
One afternoon, both fathers, one consultant. Nobody is trying to match them; a man of fifty-five and a man of seventy in the same suit look like a uniform. The job is to get them to the same weight of cloth and the same degree of dress, so the photograph shows two men who belong at the front of it.
Two shapes, one rack
The taller one needs his length and the broader one needs a portly cut, and the rack runs 34 short to 70 long with both on it. Each man is sold his own size and nothing else, because nobody on our floor is on commission.
What each of them keeps
Both should buy. This is the suit a father is photographed in for the next ten years, at the front of one room after another, and half-canvassed, $300 to $500, is the tier built for a decade of rooms.
