Hazel Park Raceway opened in 1949 and closed in April 2018 after roughly seventy years, and in 2021 an Amazon facility opened on the same ground, a sub-same-day operation holding about 35,000 products and moving something like 230,000 packages a week. Two industries, one plot of land, seventy years apart. What a town does for a living shapes what it owns to wear, and this one’s been rewritten inside a decade.
What a race track dressed like
Going to the races used to be an occasion people put a jacket on for, and that habit outlived the track by a generation in a lot of Hazel Park closets. The suits are still hanging there.
What replaced it
Work that doesn’t require one at all, which is true of most work now and isn’t a complaint. The consequence is that a man can go years without wearing a jacket and then need one on four days’ notice for something that matters.
Which is the whole argument for owning one
Not for daily wear. For the four days’ notice. One navy suit that fits, bought calmly, sitting in a closet ready: an Everyday Classic at $139 to $159 does that honestly, and nobody on our floor is on commission, so nobody will tell you it has to be more.
