Highland Park Junior College opened in 1918 with thirty-five students. Whatever those thirty-five went on to do, they started in a class small enough to fit in a room, and nobody at the time could have said which of them mattered. That’s the ordinary condition of a beginning, and it’s the reason to prepare for one properly.
The interview version
A first serious interview has the same quality: no one in the room knows yet what this person is, including him. What he wears is the only information available before he opens his mouth, and it is read in about a second.
What that second registers
Not the price of the suit, which nobody can identify. Whether the clothes appear to belong to him, which is almost entirely a matter of fit and hardly at all a matter of money.
So spend accordingly
An Everyday Classic at $139 to $159, correctly fitted, outperforms an unaltered suit at any price across a desk. Bring the shoes; Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, sets the length to them and a hem is a small job he can often do while you wait.
