Rackham Golf Course sits inside Huntington Woods, next to the Detroit Zoo, on land Horace Rackham bought in 1923; the Rackhams gave twenty-two acres of it to the zoo. It’s a Donald Ross design open to the public, which means the men playing it on a Saturday are not all members of anything, and that matters when the round turns into an evening.
Golf dress is not evening dress
A man who dresses well for golf has learned a set of rules that will not transfer: performance fabrics, a collar, a belt that matches the shoes. All correct on a course. All of it reads as sportswear the moment he sits down to dinner somewhere that expected a jacket.
The one garment that bridges it
A jacket he can pull on over what he is already wearing. Select suits on our floor sell as separates, which means the top half can be bought without the bottom half committing to anything, and that is the whole trick: an afternoon becomes an evening without going home to change.
How it should fit for that job
Worn open, over a shirt with no tie, so the collar has to lie flat by itself and the length has to end around where his hand does. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, sets both, and small jobs he can often do while you wait.
