Churchill High School has been on Newburgh Road since 1968, and among its twelve hundred or so students there’s a senior every year who walks in with money from a summer job and buys his first suit himself. He’s counting. The store should count with him, and say plainly what $139 to $159 buys and what it doesn’t.
What it buys
An Everyday Classic is a real suit, a jacket and trousers in a navy that goes to a graduation, an interview and a wedding without apology. It’s cut in the same sizes as everything else on the floor, 34 short to 70 long, so it fits him the way a suit should. That is the difference between a man in a suit and a boy in one. Nobody on our floor is on commission, so nobody walks him up a tier he can’t afford.
What it doesn’t
It doesn’t buy what $259 to $299 or $300 to $500 buys, and it shouldn’t pretend to. It buys a suit for the two or three years before his body and his budget change. That’s the right suit for that stretch of a life.
Spend the difference on the fit
Bring the shoes. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, hems the trousers to them, and a hem is a small job he can often do while you wait. A $139 suit that fits beats a $500 one that doesn’t, and he’ll know it the first time he sits down in it.
