The Marquis Theatre sits on Main Street in downtown Northville and has been the town’s room for live music and performing arts for a long time. What matters about it, for anyone deciding what to wear there, is that it is small. In a large hall a person is a shape in the dark. In a small room he is a person, at a distance where detail is legible.
What becomes visible at that range
The collar of the shirt and how it meets the neck. The cuff and how much of it shows. Whether the jacket actually closes or is merely being held closed. None of these matters at forty feet and all of them are obvious at six.
Which reorders the priorities
In a small room, a well-fitted inexpensive suit beats a badly fitted expensive one every time, because everything the extra money bought is invisible and everything the fit failed at is not.
What to do about it
Buy the shirt to a measured neck rather than a rough size, and have the jacket sleeve set against that shirt’s cuff. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, does that, and small jobs he can often do while you wait.
