The Four Points by Sheraton Detroit Novi holds a wedding of up to 120, and a wedding of 120 usually has four groomsmen. Four is a good number for a photograph and an awkward one for a bill, because we tell grooms to ask about group pricing for parties of five or more. A groom with four men is one short, and the honest thing is to say so up front rather than let him find it at the counter.
What four gets
Everything except the group-pricing conversation. One rack, one cloth, one order, each man fitted to his own shoulders, the hems pinned to the shoes they bring, and Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, doing the work. The party looks like one party in the photograph at four the same as at fourteen.
What five would get
A conversation about group pricing, and nobody on our floor is on commission, so nobody will talk a groom into a fifth groomsman to reach it. If the bride’s brother was going to be in the party anyway, he counts. If he wasn’t, four is four, and the money is better spent on the groom’s own suit.
Four is a small enough number to see
In a party of twelve a long sleeve hides in the row. In a party of four every man is a quarter of the photograph and the groom is the middle of it, so the four are fitted one at a time and the groom’s is the suit to spend on: half-canvassed, $300 to $500, bought rather than rented, because at 120 he’ll stand within arm’s length of every guest all night. The four rent, in a color picked with his suit hanging next to it, and stand beside him.
