The Baronette Renaissance in Novi puts a wedding of up to 280 in its largest room, and a hotel ballroom lights a man from above, warm and low. A groom choosing between black and midnight blue is really choosing how he’ll photograph in that light, and most choose wrong.
What black does under a chandelier
It goes flat. The lapel and the body become one dark shape, the shirt does all the work, and in the photographs he’s a white triangle with a face. Black is right for a tuxedo, where the satin lapel gives the light something to catch. On a suit, under that ceiling, it disappears.
What midnight blue does
Midnight blue reads as black to the eye and as blue to the camera. The seams show. The lapel has an edge. Across a room of 280 he looks like a man in a very dark suit, which is the point, and up close he looks like a man who chose it. That’s the whole difference.
