The Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton Detroit Novi takes 440 for a reception, and a company that holds its gala there fills it with men who wear a tuxedo exactly once a year. For that man the question isn’t what to wear. It’s whether to keep one in the closet or borrow one for the night, and the answer depends on a number.
Count last year
The number is how many invitations actually said black tie last year. The gala. A June wedding that meant it. The fundraiser in March. That count decides it.
Once a year: rent
One gala a year is a rental, and the only thing between a rental that looks rented and one that doesn’t is whether a person fitted it. Here a consultant puts it on you, Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, pins what needs pinning, and it’s hemmed to the shoes you brought.
More than that: own
If the Sheraton is one of several black-tie nights a year, the math turns over at some count, and both prices are on our floor, so you can find it. A tuxedo you own is fitted once and then it’s just in the closet, fitted. Nobody on our floor is on commission, so nobody counts your nights for you with a thumb on the scale. You count them; we’ll say which side of the line you’re on.
