The Penn Theatre, across from Kellogg Park, opened on December 4, 1941 with a screening of “Weekend in Havana”. It’s an Art Moderne cinema, it closed in 2004, and the Friends of the Penn reopened it two years later. Survival at that length is rarely luck.
What survives
Things that were built properly and things that stayed useful. The Penn qualifies on both counts, and neither would have been enough alone: a beautiful building nobody needs closes, and a useful building put up cheaply falls down.
The wardrobe equivalent
A garment has to be well made and it has to be something you actually reach for. A magnificent suit for an occasion that never recurs is as useless as a shabby one you wear constantly, and men over-invest in the first kind.
Which points at the navy suit
Dull, correct, and the one you will genuinely wear: interviews, weddings, funerals, anything unexpected. Buy that one properly, half-canvassed at $300 to $500 if it will be worn often, and buy the interesting things afterward if at all.
