From Pontiac there are two routes to our door: down Woodward, or down I-75, either of them to I-696 and the Greenfield exit. One is the freeway and one goes through everything. Which a man picks tends to reflect how he’s thinking about the errand, and it’s worth being deliberate about that.
The freeway version
Get there, buy a suit, get back. Perfectly reasonable, and it works if he arrives knowing what the suit is for and has the shoes with him.
The Woodward version
Slower, and it puts him in the frame of mind for a purchase rather than an errand. That matters more than it sounds, because what separates a suit that fits from one that is merely his size is usually fifteen minutes of willingness to try a second jacket.
Either way, the same three things
Bring the shoes. Know the occasion and the date. Be willing to try more than the first jacket that closes. Everything else, including which road, is detail: a rack of 32,000 suits doesn’t care how you got there.
