Somewhere in Rochester Hills there is a good suit that went to a wedding at Meadow Brook Hall four years ago, went to one funeral after that, and has hung untouched since. Another invitation has arrived. The suit has three possible futures and a man cannot tell which from looking at it on the hanger, because a suit on a hanger tells you nothing. Put it on. A minute settles it.
Future one: it comes back
The jacket closes, the collar lies down, and what’s wrong is a waist and a hem. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, is on site in our store. Basic alterations can often be completed while you wait. For bigger work, he quotes the job and confirms the completion date before he starts.
Future two: it comes back changed
Four years moved the waist more than the chest, which is the usual direction. That’s a bigger job than a hem but well inside what a tailor does, and it’s the future most of these suits have.
Future three: it doesn’t
The shoulder seam has ended up outside the shoulder. Nothing can be done about that one, by anyone, and the useful thing is to find it out with weeks to spare rather than the night before.
