Oakland University opened in 1957 as a unit of Michigan State, went independent in 1970 and now teaches close to 16,000 students on the grounds that hold Meadow Brook Hall. A university that grew that far in one lifetime turns out graduates every spring who need a suit for the two occasions a modern graduate actually wears one: the interview, and the first day if the interview goes well.
Twice is the whole brief
Not fifty times. Twice, then a few more times a year afterward if the job turns out to want it. Buying for a life the graduate does not have yet is how families end up spending $500 on a suit that hangs unworn until it no longer fits, which is a waste dressed up as an investment.
So buy for the interview
Navy, plain, and correct in the two places an interviewer’s eye lands: the collar, sitting flat, and the trouser breaking once on a proper shoe. An Everyday Classic, $139 to $159, does that honestly, and the consultant will say so rather than walk a twenty-two-year-old up a tier, because nobody on our floor is on commission.
Then upgrade on purpose
Once there’s a job with a dress code attached, come back and buy the second suit knowing what the room actually wants. That’s a better sequence than guessing in April.
