A promotion is the commonest reason a man orders custom for the first time, and Rochester Hills produces a steady supply of them along the M-59 corridor. He has worn rack suits for a decade and wants to mark the change. Custom starts at $599 here. Three things are genuinely different about it, and it’s worth knowing which, because one of the three isn’t what people expect.
What changes: the shoulders
Everyone has one shoulder lower than the other, and a rack suit is cut as though nobody does. Ben takes twenty measurements himself and two of them are that asymmetry, so the jacket is built around it instead of hanging off it.
What changes: the choice of cloth
The bolts come from Reda, Zegna, VBC, Marzotto and Style Biella, and choosing between them is the part a man is least equipped for on his first order. Say how many days a year the suit will work and let the consultant narrow it; that instruction is worth more than any preference about color.
What doesn’t change: the finishing
The last fitting is with Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, exactly as it would be for a rack suit. Custom buys a better starting point, not a different tailor.
