Bring the two fathers of a Meadow Brook wedding onto our floor and, before anyone has touched a hanger, each will say something. They almost always say one of two sentences, and which one he says is more useful than any measurement, because it tells you what he is actually afraid of.
“I’ve got a suit at home”
This father is afraid of being sold something. He’s right that his suit may be fine and wrong that he can tell. Have him bring it, put it on, and get a straight answer, which he can trust here because nobody on our floor is on commission. If it fits, he leaves with a hem and his money. If the shoulder has moved, no tailor can follow it, and now he knows.
“I don’t want to look like I’m trying”
This father is afraid of being conspicuous, usually because the other father is taller, richer or younger. The fix isn’t a plainer suit. It’s the same darkness of cloth as the other man, so the two of them read as a pair at the front of a room rather than as a comparison.
Either way, buy
A father wears this again inside two years, at a christening or the second wedding in the family. Half-canvassed, $300 to $500, is the tier that lasts that long.
