Macomb Mall opened in 1964 at Gratiot and Masonic, developed by the Schostak Corporation, anchored by Sears, Crowley’s and Kresge. Every one of those three names has since left American retail. The mall was built around them and outlived all of them, which is a useful thing to notice about anchoring anything to a brand.
Names move faster than things
The buildings, the roads and the habits stayed. The names on the doors turned over completely inside two generations, and shoppers adapted without much difficulty because what they wanted was never the name.
The wardrobe version of this
Men who buy by label are buying the least durable part of the transaction. A label can be sold, cheapened or discontinued, and none of that affects whether the suit fits, which is the only property anyone can actually see.
So buy the properties, not the name
Cloth you can feel, construction you can ask about, and a fit that has been adjusted to you. Nobody on our floor is on commission, so nobody here gains by steering that conversation toward a name.
