Custom starts at $599 on our floor and involves two or three fittings along the way; the length of it depends on the cloth and on those fittings, so ask Ben for the current timeline for your date. It is a real service and it is the right answer for some men. It is also, for a substantial number of the men who ask about it, unnecessary, and it’s worth being direct about that.
When it isn’t needed
If a man is close to a standard proportion and near a stocked size, a well-chosen rack suit, properly altered, may provide the fit he needs for less money and less time. Paying the difference buys choice of cloth, not a better fit.
When it genuinely is
A pronounced difference between the shoulders. A build that falls outside what the rack reaches even with separates. Or a man who wants a specific cloth from Reda, Zegna, VBC, Marzotto or Style Biella that no rack suit happens to be made in.
Who decides
Not the person selling it, ideally. Nobody on our floor is on commission, which is the only structural reason to believe an answer to this question, and it’s why the question gets asked honestly here.
