At a great many weddings here, one of the two fathers is wearing something bought for an occasion twenty-five years earlier, or is about to buy his first suit since then. Everything about the process has changed in that time except the part he’s worried about, which is being sold something he doesn’t need.
What’s changed
The range. A rack now runs 34 short to 70 long with portly included, which means a man whose shape has moved considerably since his own wedding is a normal customer rather than a problem to solve.
What hasn’t
That a fitted suit looks better than an expensive one, and that this was true in 1999 as well. He probably knew that then and has no reason to doubt it now.
The thing he’s worried about
Nobody on our floor is on commission. That isn’t a slogan, it’s a structure: the person advising him gains nothing whichever tier he buys, so “the middle one is enough for you” is a sentence he can actually hear here. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, does the rest.
