In any city this size there are a few thousand men who have never once walked into a shop and found their size hanging there. They are told, politely, that it can be ordered. They have been told this since they were nineteen. Over time they stop asking and start assuming that suits are simply not made for them, which isn’t true and never was.
What they’ve actually been experiencing
Not an absence of their size in the world, but an absence of it in shops that carry a rack rather than a floor. A store stocking a broad range in one or two sizes deep will always fail the ends of the range.
What depth changes
A rack running 34 short to 70 long, portly included, means a 46 long is a section rather than a special request, and the man tries several and chooses. He’s making the same decision everyone else makes, which he may never have done before.
And where separates come in
If his chest and waist are far apart, select suits on our floor sell as separates, so the jacket and the trousers can be different sizes from one cloth. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, finishes from there.
