Bay Pointe’s rooms on Middle Straits Lake, the Club Room, the Lakeside Room and the Sunset Ballroom, take events from 50 to 500, and not all of them are weddings: the company dinner, the awards night, the retirement send-off. The difference is that you might be called to the front of the room. Standing alone at a podium is a harder test of a suit than standing in a line at a wedding.
What a podium shows
Everything from the waist up, from every table at once. A jacket that’s buttoned and pulls at the button is the first thing they see. A jacket that fits through the chest and closes without a crease is invisible. That’s the job. The consultant checks it buttoned, because that’s how you’ll walk up.
What the table shows
The rest of the night is sitting. Trousers cut to sit at the waist stay there for three hours; a low pair slides down and the shirt comes out. Bring that night’s shoes to the fitting; the hem is set to them.
Which suit
Charcoal or a deep navy, plain cloth, a white shirt. Half-canvassed construction, $300 to $500, if this is the suit you’ll keep for every dinner after; Signature Wool, $259 to $299, if you want the same look for less. Either one gets fitted to you before it leaves.
