The Detroit Lions have had their practice home and headquarters in Allen Park since 2002, which is long enough that a generation here has grown up with professional athletes as neighbors. That does something quietly unhelpful to how ordinary men think about clothing.
The unhelpful part
Almost every suit photographed for advertising is on a body closer to an athlete’s than to a customer’s, and the effect is that men assume a suit will never look right on them because they are not built like that. It’s the wrong conclusion from correct evidence.
What actually determines the result
Whether the suit was fitted to the body it is on. A very ordinary body in a properly altered suit looks considerably better than an exceptional one in a suit off the rack, which is the reverse of what the photographs imply.
And athletic builds are their own problem anyway
A large chest over a small waist falls outside what a standard size chart assumes. Select suits on our floor sell as separates, so the jacket and trousers come in different sizes cut from one cloth. That fixes on the rack a problem most men are told requires an order from scratch.
