The Townsend’s Regency Room holds a hundred and fifty, and that is the size of a retirement dinner for a man who has worked in Birmingham for thirty years: partners, staff, the clients who became friends, the family at the front table. He will be looked at all evening and photographed with every one of them.
The last work suit, and the best one
This is the evening for the suit he always meant to buy. Charcoal, from the Half-Canvassed Luxury tier at $300 to $500, or custom from $599 if the date is a couple of months out. It will be worn to the weddings of the colleagues’ children for a decade, so it isn’t extravagant. It is timed.
Fit for a night of standing
He will be on his feet for a speech and a receiving line. A jacket that closes cleanly when he stands and a trouser that holds its break are the difference between looking thanked and looking tired. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, fits it standing, not only seated.
From the Townsend it is south on Woodward and west on I-696 to Greenfield. Come in with the shoes; a dinner shoe changes the hem.
