Christ Church Cranbrook on Church Road was founded in 1928 as one of the Cranbrook institutions, and a wedding there tends to come with a shoebox of photographs from the last two weddings the family held in it. The grandfather in 1962. The father in 1991. The groom’s is going up on the wall beside them.
Dress to belong in the box
Fashion dates a photograph faster than anything in it. A jacket with an ordinary lapel, a trouser with an ordinary break, a plain white shirt and a tie in a single color will look right beside 1962 and 1991 and will look right in 2050. The narrow, cropped suit of a particular year won’t.
Charcoal, then navy
Charcoal is the color that has never been wrong in a church photograph. Navy is the second choice and photographs as warmer. Black is a tuxedo color and a tuxedo at a morning or afternoon service is a mistake the old photographs will not have made.
Bring the father
He is in the photograph too, and his suit from 1991 has probably drifted at the shoulder. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, fits the groom and the father at one coordinated fitting, and basic work on the older suit is often available the same day, depending on the garment and current workload.
