Oakland Hills Country Club was founded in 1916, its South Course opened in 1918, and between them they have held seventeen major championships, six U.S. Opens and the 2004 Ryder Cup among them. A tournament week fills the clubhouse with dinners. Every club writes its own rules for what a man wears to one. Check yours. Odds are it comes down to one garment.
The blazer
A navy blazer over gray wool trousers, a white or light blue shirt, a leather shoe. It is the one garment that has never been wrong at a clubhouse dinner anywhere, and it doesn’t need a tie to look complete, though it takes one when the evening calls for it.
Why separates make it
A blazer is bought on its own, in your jacket size, and the trousers on their own, in yours. That’s the whole trick of it: the jacket fits the shoulder it was bought for, not the trouser it happened to come with.
The one fit that matters
A blazer worn over a sweater in October and over a shirt in June needs a little room in the chest and none in the sleeve. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, sets the sleeve so the cuff shows and leaves the body to do its two jobs.
