Fordson High School has stood on Ford Road since 1922, about 2,100 students strong, its teams named for a tractor. Every June a class walks out of it, and most of the young men in it buy their first suit for the ceremony. The ceremony is one afternoon. The suit gets worn to everything after it, and that’s what it should be bought for.
The everything
A job interview in July. A cousin’s wedding in August. A funeral, sometimes. A navy suit with a white shirt is right in every one of those rooms, and black is right in one of them. Buy navy.
The shoulder
The one that fits today. A first suit bought a size up to last never looks right, because the shoulder is the seam a tailor can’t move. Everything else, the sleeves, the waist, the hem, can follow him for a year.
The tier
An Everyday Classic, $139 to $159, for the boy who’ll be a different size by Thanksgiving; the blend holds a press. Signature Wool, $259 to $299, if he’s done growing and headed somewhere that wants a suit on Mondays. Nobody on our floor is on commission, so the consultant asks which before pulling either, and Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, hems to the shoes he’ll cross the stage in.
