The University of Michigan-Dearborn was founded in 1959 on just over 200 acres that Ford gave it, four colleges now, and every spring its graduates walk across a stage and into the interviews the degree was for. The suit for that season is bought for the chair, not the stage.
The chair
Sitting is where fit shows: the front pulls, the collar lifts, the trousers ride up. The interviewer sees all three before the first question. Ask the consultant to check the suit sitting down, and let the shoulder, the one seam a tailor can’t move, be the one that decides the size.
Navy, plain
Navy carries a graduate through the whole year without a second thought: the interviews, the friend’s wedding in between, the dinner his parents take him to afterward. Patterns can wait until a job has told him what its office actually wears.
The tier
Signature Wool, $259 to $299, if the offer is signed and the suit is going to work weekly. An Everyday Classic, $139 to $159, if the first job is still a question; its blend holds a press through a season of waiting rooms. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, hems either to the shoes he’ll interview in.
