Cass Technical High School opened in 1907 with 110 students. It now has something like 2,493. Every June a class walks out of it and joins a line of graduates stretching back more than a century, most of whom, at some point that summer, put on a suit for the first time.
The suit is a threshold object
It marks the point where a young man starts being addressed as an adult by strangers, and it does so before he particularly feels like one. Everybody who has worn one for the first time remembers the specific self-consciousness of it.
What removes the self-consciousness
Fit, entirely. A suit that fits feels like clothing; a suit that doesn’t feels like a costume, and the wearer’s discomfort is legible to everyone in the room. This is the whole reason to be measured rather than to guess a size.
What that costs
Less than people assume. An Everyday Classic at $139 to $159, properly fitted by Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, carries a graduate through a summer better than an unaltered suit at three times the price.
