The city was East Detroit for sixty-three years, from 1929 until 1992. Anyone who grew up here before the change still says the old name, without thinking, and will for the rest of their lives. Both names are correct in their own way and nobody is confused by hearing either.
Clothing carries the same doubleness
A man who learned to dress in one era keeps its instincts. Someone who bought his first suit in 1985 has a sense of what a jacket should look like that was formed then, and it doesn’t simply update because fashions moved.
Which is largely fine
Because the things that were correct then are mostly correct now: a navy suit, a white shirt, a jacket that fits the shoulders. Menswear changes at the edges and holds still in the middle.
What genuinely has changed
The range available. A rack running 34 short to 70 long with portly included means the shape a man has at sixty-five is on it, which was not reliably true when he bought that first suit. Nobody on our floor is on commission, so the honest version of that gets said.
