A man with a 44 chest and a 36 waist has what the trade calls a drop 8, and if he’s spent his life in Farmington Hills gyms he’s also spent it believing suits don’t fit him. They don’t, as suits. A suit is cut with a standard drop of six, so a 44 jacket arrives with a 38 trouser, two inches too big for him in the waist. The answer isn’t custom, and it isn’t a tailor performing surgery on the trousers. It’s separates.
What separates means
Select suits on our floor sell as separates: the jacket in one size, the trousers in another, from the same cloth. A 44 jacket and a 36 trouser, matched at the rack. It’s in the store’s own FAQ: a drop 8 is what separates are for.
What still gets altered
The small things. A jacket that fits the chest may still want a little taken in at the waist, and the trousers are hemmed to his shoes. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, does both, and small jobs he can often do while you wait.
When it really is custom
Past a drop 8, or with a shoulder the rack doesn’t make, custom from $599 is the honest answer. Below it, separates get there for the rack price, and the consultant will say which before he shows you either.
