Shops filled the whole mile of Joseph Campau, and at its height it was the second busiest shopping district in southeast Michigan, behind only downtown Detroit. A street like that trains its customers in a specific habit: you walk it, you look, you know the shopkeepers, and you buy from people who know you.
That habit is worth keeping
Being known by whoever sells to you isn’t nostalgia. It’s straightforwardly better, because someone who has measured you before starts from information rather than from a guess.
What it depends on
Not proximity, which is what people assume. It depends on the salesperson having no reason to push you anywhere. Nobody on our floor is on commission, which is the structural version of the same thing a neighborhood shop had informally.
And on continuity
Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, works on site in our store rather than as an outside service, so the person who altered the last suit is there for the next one. That is the part of an old shopping street that can actually be reproduced.
