A man who retires from Trinity Health Livonia after thirty years there has owned, over that time, a series of suits for work: the interview suit, the promotion suit, the suit for the dinners. Every one of them was bought for someone else’s room. The suit he buys the month after he retires is the first one that isn’t, and it should feel like it.
Nobody else is choosing
For thirty years the color was navy because the room wanted navy. Now the room is a grandson’s wedding, a dinner with friends, a Sunday that calls for a jacket, and the color can be the one he likes. A brown. A mid gray with a check. A blue that’s actually blue. The consultant will show three he wouldn’t have been allowed to wear to the hospital.
The fit for a body that’s done changing
A man at sixty-five knows his shape and it isn’t going anywhere, which makes this the suit worth buying in half-canvassed, $300 to $500: it will shape to him over years and he will wear it for years. The rack runs 34 short to 70 long, portly included, and he tries on three that were cut for him.
No hurry, for once
Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, does the hem and the sleeve; small jobs he can often do while you wait, and on anything bigger he quotes the job and confirms the completion date before he starts. For the first time there is no date it has to be ready by. From Livonia it’s I-96 to I-696 east, off at Greenfield.
