The Strand’s almost 1,200 seats are spread across a main floor and two balconies. Anyone on stage is being watched from three quite different distances at once, and nothing they wear can be optimised for all three. That’s not a theater problem. It’s the ordinary condition of being in any room with people in it.
The three distances
Close, where cloth and finish are legible. Middle, where fit and proportion dominate. Far, where only silhouette and color survive. Every man in every room is being seen at all three at once by different people.
Which is why fit beats everything
Fit is the only quality that reads at all three distances. Expensive cloth is invisible past the first. A striking color reads at the third and can look loud at the first. Fit works everywhere, which is why it’s where the money should go.
What that means practically
Buy a tier you can afford and spend properly on the alterations rather than the reverse. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, quotes each job before he starts, so that spending is knowable in advance.
Also for Pontiac: Down Woodward, or Down I-75. More on style consulting, or plan your visit to our Oak Park showroom.
