The Redford Theatre came about because a consortium of local people out of Plymouth put up the money, and it operated for the Kunsky chain. Local capital, outside operating expertise, one building. It’s a sensible division: the people nearby knew there was demand, the chain knew how to run a cinema.
The same division applies at a fitting
The customer arrives holding facts nobody in the shop can guess. The occasion. The number of times a year it will actually come off the hanger. Whatever annoyed him about the last suit he owned. His budget. That is the brief, and it exists only in his head.
The shop knows the rest
Which of 32,000 suits is in his size and cut, what a given cloth does over a year of wear, and what can and cannot be altered. Handing that judgement over is not a loss of control; it’s the point of going somewhere with people in it.
Where it goes wrong
When a customer states a size instead of a brief, and gets sold exactly what he asked for rather than what he needed.
