Downtown Royal Oak is a dinner town. Main Street fills on a Friday, and on the third Saturday of August Woodward turns into the Dream Cruise and every patio faces the road.
A sport coat is not a suit jacket
None of those evenings wants a suit. They want a sport coat, and a sport coat isn’t a suit jacket worn alone. A suit jacket is cut to sit over matching trousers. Worn on its own, it can look like a man lost his other half. A sport coat is built softer, in a cloth with some texture in it, and it is meant to sit over a pair of trousers that don’t match.
Pattern up top, plain below
The rule that keeps it easy: the jacket is the pattern, the trousers are plain. Put a check or a windowpane up top and a solid gray, navy or stone below. Skip the tie. Add one pocket square, and wear a shoe that isn’t a sneaker.
The sleeve decides it
Fit still decides it. A sport coat that is too long in the sleeve reads as borrowed, and Roman at Lincoln Tailor, inside our store, can often adjust a sleeve the same day, depending on the garment and current workload. Come in and try a few. We carry sizes from 34 short to 70 long, so there is usually more than one worthwhile option.
