The towers along Big Beaver, Kelly’s at 999 West among them, hold boardrooms where a man presents to people who are deciding about him, and the suit for that room isn’t the interview suit. The interview suit is meant to disappear. The boardroom suit is meant to be noticed and then forgotten, which is a narrower target.
Why this is the custom suit
A rack suit is cut for an average. A man who presents for a living has a shape the room has learned, and a suit that fits it exactly, through the shoulder and the chest and down to the hand, carries authority without a single loud thing about it. Custom starts at $599. Ben takes twenty measurements. You pick the cloth from five mills: Reda, Zegna, VBC, Marzotto, Style Biella. Then two fittings, sometimes three.
Four hours of sitting
A cloth that holds its press through four hours of sitting and stands up cleanly when you do, in charcoal or a navy with a quiet stripe. Not the lightest one on the table; the lightest cloth creases at the lap.
Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, does the final fitting.
