The suit in the closet is from a wedding a decade ago and a body a size ago. Troy High School opened in 1950, so every year a class reaches its thirtieth reunion and finds this out together, in a room of men in their late forties.
Do not diet into the old suit
Buy for the shape you are. A jacket that closes without pulling and a trouser that sits at the waist you have make a man look fit; a suit he is squeezed into does the opposite. The row of classmates is the test. Everyone in it is the same age, and the man who looks best is the one whose jacket closes.
The color that flatters at forty-eight
Navy. Mid-gray if the night is in summer. Not black, which is a tuxedo or a funeral, and this is neither. A crisp white shirt does more for a face than any tie.
What the old one can still do
Bring it in. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, will tell you whether it can be made to close, and the basics are often done the same day, depending on the garment and current workload. If it can’t, you’ll be told that too, and the rack is right there.
