Alfred P. Sloan conceived the Technical Center in 1944, and the campus opened in stages from the 1950s into the 1970s. Thirty years from idea to completion, at a cost above $125 million. Some projects genuinely justify that patience. A suit does not, and men routinely treat buying one as though it did.
The endless deferral
He knows he needs one. He will get around to it when he has lost some weight, when the promotion comes through, when there’s an actual occasion. Then the occasion arrives with four days’ notice and he buys badly under pressure, which is how most poor suits get bought.
What the pressure costs
Not usually money. Choice. Everything on our floor can be done quickly, but rushing removes the option of waiting for a better answer, and it removes the slack for anything the fitting turns up.
The alternative is unglamorous
Buy the suit before there is a reason to. One navy suit, correctly fitted, hanging ready. Roman, master tailor at Lincoln Tailor, on site in our store, quotes each job before he starts, and there is nothing he does that is improved by a deadline.
